Shaker or blender for an oat smoothie
By Pure Perks ยท
Choose a shaker, blender or cooked bowl by your ingredients and preferred texture. Includes quantities and steps for a latte shake and mango oat smoothie.
Use a shaker for ingredients designed to mix into liquid without chopping. Choose a blender when you want whole fruit, frozen pieces or oat flakes broken down. If you have neither, make a cooked oat bowl. The useful choice is the method that fits your ingredients and morning, not the most powerful appliance.

Choose by what you want to make
- A compatible mix and liquid: choose a shaker if the pack permits it. It avoids a powered appliance and can double as your drinking container, but it does not cut up ingredients.
- A drink with fruit and oats processed together: choose a suitable blender. Check whether it can handle the recipe's dry grinding and ice, as well as the batch size.
- Breakfast with no blending or shaking: make cooked oats in a saucepan. Choose a fridge-prepared overnight recipe if you prefer a cold bowl and can prepare it the night before.
A shaker recipe can still involve preparation. Mashed banana must be mashed first, and chilled coffee must already be cold. A blender offers more scope to break ingredients down, but brings a blade assembly to clean. Neither tool guarantees your preferred texture.
Read the oats packet as well as the equipment instructions. Ordinary instant oats are not automatically suitable for a cold shaker drink. The methods below use manufacturer recipes and are paraphrased, not independently kitchen-tested.
Make a shaker latte with the preparation done first
BlenderBottle's Oat Milk Latte Protein Shake uses mashed banana, chilled espresso and quick oats. Choose it if you are comfortable with a drink that may retain noticeable pieces.
- Liquids: 1 cup vanilla oat milk and a chilled double espresso.
- Other ingredients: one mashed banana, one scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/4 cup quick oats and a dash of cinnamon.
The source does not specify a universal scoop weight; follow your chosen powder's serving instructions. Use quick oats suitable for this preparation under their manufacturer's directions.
- Mash the banana separately and chill the espresso. Never put hot or warm coffee into a sealed shaker.
- Add the listed ingredients to a suitable shaker in the recipe's order. Stay within its fill limit and fit its mixing insert as instructed.
- Secure the lid and shake to combine. Check the texture before deciding whether this method suits you.
If oat or banana pieces bother you, choose the blender route. Shaking for longer will not give the bottle cutting blades.
Make a mango and banana smoothie in a blender
For one serving of Quaker's Mango Banana Oatmeal Smoothie, use:
- Oats and fruit: 1/2 cup Quaker quick or old-fashioned oats, 1/2 cup chopped ripe mango and one small ripe banana in pieces.
- Other ingredients: 1 tablespoon unsweetened coconut flakes, 1/4 cup orange juice and 1/2 cup water. Two or three ice cubes are optional.
- Use a blender approved for dry grinding and process the oats finely first.
- Add the mango, banana, coconut, orange juice and water. Blend until combined and smooth.
- If wanted, blend in the optional ice, provided your machine permits it.
A portable blender only suits this recipe if it permits dry grinding and the batch fits its capacity. If it cannot do that step, choose another compatible recipe rather than assuming every small blender handles oats the same way.
Make a bowl if you do not need a drink
You do not need to buy a blender just to eat oats. For one serving, Quaker's old-fashioned oat instructions use 1/2 cup of its oats and 1 cup water or milk.
- Bring the liquid to a boil in a saucepan.
- Stir in the oats and cook over medium heat for about five minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Serve as a bowl. Follow the packet instead if your oat product has different directions.
For a cold bowl, use a manufacturer-supported overnight-oats recipe and refrigerate it as directed the night before. Pack a spoon; a spoonable breakfast need not become a shaker drink.
Account for cleanup and the journey to work
BlenderBottle's care guidance calls for cleaning after each use and warns against hot or warm liquids in its shakers. Follow your appliance's own cleaning instructions. Keep a milk-based breakfast cold and follow the ingredients' storage directions; a portable bottle does not provide refrigeration.
If you would rather use a mix than measure separate smoothie ingredients, Pure Perks is one option that permits either tool. Prepare one whole 65 g sachet with 250 ml chilled milk in a shaker or blender. Those directions apply to the mix, not the loose-oat recipes above.
Choose the method before buying equipment
For tomorrow morning, pick one recipe and check its preparation against the tool you already own. Use the shaker for a compatible mixture, the blender for ingredients it can process, or a saucepan for a bowl. Buy a new appliance only if it solves a job your current setup cannot do.
